Bing released confirmation during an interview with Danny Sullivan that they do indeed factor in links shared via Twitter and Facebook. Impact of links from these services have been suspected for sometime, but we now have official confirmation of their effect.
While the impact of social links (Twitter and Facebook) may be minor now, it's clear they will have increasingly powerful effects. To give you a specific real life example, if President Obama starts dumping links in his Twitter feed, those links will impact everyone's search, not just those that follow him.
Here are Bing's comments on how Social Authority is used -
"We do look at the social authority of a user. We look at how many people you follow, how many follow you, and this can add a little weight to a listing in regular search results. It carries much more weight in Bing Social Search, where tweets from more authoritative people will flow to the top when best match relevancy is used.
Based on these new disclosures in the interview, we can deduce:
* Links posted by multiple unique accounts are worth more than those coming from a single account.
* Links that are retweeted or shared by other unique users are likely to carry more weight.
* Bing takes into account known public figures and/or publishers and will likely make their links worth more.
* It's likely Bing can detect the interactions between those who follow you and who you follow or friends in your network. The more interactions between accounts, retweeting, sharing, posting on walls, etc. that goes on, the more likely the account in question is of higher authority.
* For Facebook, only links or other data that is viewable by everyone is capable of being used. Links shared between friends only are not seen or used by Bing.
* If you share a link on Facebook, back it up with a Tweet. Bing says if the link is shared in both places, it's more likely to be legitimate.
* Retweets are the new form of link building. The more retweets your links posted in Twitter get, the more they will influence ranking.
